Imam Reports To Federal Prison

Imam Sentenced To Two Months In Prison For Ties To Terrorist Groups

UPDATED: 12:52 pm EST November 22, 2004

The leader of Ohio's largest mosquehas reported to a federal prison in Columbiana County this morning, NewsChannel5 reported.

Fawaz Damra leaves behind a divided following and concerns about his family's welfare.

The imam of the Islamic Center of Cleveland was convicted of lying about connections to terrorist groups when he applied for U.S. citizenship. He has appealed.

The 42-year-old was sentenced to two months in prison and four months of house arrest.

Damra unsuccessfully sought to delay his sentence until January to await the arrival of his parents-in-law from the Middle East to help care for his wife and children.

The low-security federal prison in Elkton is about 20 miles south of Youngstown in northeast Ohio and 70 miles from Damra's home.
