Officers Accused Of Stealing Money From Teens

Officers Allegedly Took Money From Teens During Search

UPDATED: 8:05 am EDT August 6, 2004

Two East Cleveland police officers were indicted Thursday for allegedly stealing money from three people whom they pulled over and searched, reported NewsChannel5.

Officers Shawna Glaspy and Torris Moore were charged with aggravated robbery, theft and tampering with evidence.

On June 12, the two officers reportedly pulled over a car of teens, two juveniles and one 18-year-old, for allegedly running a stoplight.

The officers searched the teens and took around $500 from them. They then told the teens to get into the police cruiser while they searched the car.

The officers then reportedly told the teens they found drugs in the car, and they could either be arrested for drugs or let the officers keep the money.

But prosecutors say there is no evidence that there were drugs in the car, and no drug charges are pending against the teens.

The East Cleveland police chief said that the behavior of Glaspy and Moore is in no way indicative of the police department as a whole.

The two officers have been suspended without pay.

They allegedly took money from the teens' pockets during a search, but did not return it.

The teens told their parents, who then informed prosecutors.
