COPLEY, Ohio -- Every summer door-to-door sales crews hit the streets attempting to convince people to purchase their products.Last week, an 85-year-old woman told police in Copley that she was assaulted and robbed by one of these salespeople.Police have arrested a 16-year-old in connection with the assault, and Summit County juvenile authorities are holding the teen.A NewsChannel 5 investigation found that the company for which the teen works is United Entrepreneurs out of Texas.Dan Daniels is in charge of United Entrepreneurs and says that he specializes in turning around troubled teens.“(The idea is that) they will make an honest living and see that they don’t need to be out in the street doing something unethical or morally wrong,” Daniels said.Daniels says he’s never had a problem before and that the teen involved in the alleged assault is not a “throwaway.”Copley Police Chief Michael Mier does not share Daniels’ optimism regarding the door-to-door sales personnel.“We’ve found, more often than not, the individuals (on the sales crews) have criminal records,” Mier said. “They’re not the kind of people you want walking around your neighborhood.”The president of Austin Diversified products -- a door-to-door sales company -- told NewsChannel 5 that a few of his salespeople have been arrested before, but it’s a small percentage compared with those he’s helped.
