A 5-year-old girl drowned Wednesday morning at a campground by the Berlin Reservoir, reported NewsChannel5.

According to the Berlin Center Fire Department, the girl went missing around 10:45 a.m. at the Hickory Campground in Mahoning County, and rescue crews began searching the lake.

Five-year-old Sarah Duff had wandered away with her 4-year-old brother to a steep embankment, and she somehow tumbled into about 20 feet of water.

John Fye, who was camping nearby at the time, tried to help with the rescue effort after he heard the girl's mother screaming for help.

"I jumped right in and started searching. It's all we could do. The water just went straight down," said Fye.

Dive teams from several fire departments led a tag-team effort to find the girl, eventually finding her lifeless body about an hour and a half later, just a short distance from where she fell in.
