Investigation: Some Northeast Ohio Bridges Potentially Dangerous

ODOT Inspecting Bridges Yearly To Ensure Safe Conditions

Just how safe are the bridges you drive on everyday?

The state of Ohio is having trouble keeping pace with all of the needed repairs, and the tens of millions of dollars that are required to make them, reported NewsChannel5's Joe Pagonakis.

According to the latest statistics from the Ohio Department of Transportation, 100 of Cuyahoga, Geauga, and Lake counties' 890 bridges are considered substandard and in need of repair.

One example is the railroad bridge at Carnegie and East 55th Street. Leonard Whitworth says trains roar by, knocking down debris and loose concrete -- a potentially dangerous situation for cars below.

"Somebody is going to come by and have their windshield busted out from the fallen rocks," said Whitworth.

The bridge is one of 30 in Cuyahoga County given a "4" rating by the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The rating scale is one through 10. If a bridge receives a rating any lower than four, it would be forced to close.

In response to a growing number of deteriorating bridges in northeast Ohio, ODOT is now inspecting every bridge at least once a year, hoping to keep pace with a problem that has left Ohio millions of repair dollars short, reported Pagonakis.

ODOT insists all Ohio bridges are safe, and it is doing what it can to avoid a bridge collapse, such as a collapse in Oklahoma that killed several motorists in 2002.

ODOT is hoping legislation introduced by congressmen Dennis Kucinich and Steven Latourette will pass, which would provide $2 billion in interest-free loans to help deal the growing number of bridges that are deteriorating into disrepair.

Here's a list of some bridges in Cuyahoga County that have been found to be in poor condition:

  • Stream bridge, 1.73 mi. east of Route 252
  • Norfolk Southern railroad bridge, E. 39th Street--Cleveland
  • Norfolk Southern railroad bridge, Route A5 at Hayden
  • Railroad bridge at Jones Rd. -- Cleveland
  • Norfolk Southern railroad bridge, Harvard Ave. -- Cleveland
  • Norfolk Southern railroad bridge, Henry Street -- Cleveland
  • Bog Creek bridge, 1.42 mi. west of Route 42 -- Middleburg Heights
  • Norfolk Southern railroad bridge, E. 55th Street -- Cleveland
  • CSX, Norfolk Southern, RTA 13 bridge, E. 120th Street -- Cleveland
  • CR-283, Grant Ave. -- Cleveland
  • Norfolk Southern railroad bridge, E. 79th Street -- Cleveland
  • RTA 105, Woodhill Road -- Cleveland
  • CSX, Norfolk Southern, RTA 14, E. 117th Street -- Cleveland

If you are concerned about bridges in your neighborhood or along a route you travel, you can report the bridge by contacting ODOT's district 12 office at (216) 581-2100.

Visit ODOT's Web site to find a list of bridges under repair and when they're going to reopen.
