Lonz Winery To Remain Closed
Rescuers Recall Terror During Collapse
UPDATED: 8:24 a.m. EDT July 17, 2000
The Lonz Winery on Middle Bass Island in Lake Erie will remain closed for some time.
According to NewsChannel5, for the first time in two weeks, rescuers in a terrace collapse recalled the terror that they saw and heard during the July 1 accident.
Rescuers said that they remember seeing people on picnic benches get buried under an avalanche of concrete. They described the scene as "a tangle of arms and legs sticking out from under collapsed concrete," according to The Associated Press.
Most of the screams, they said, came from vacationers still standing.
One person died in the collapse, and investigators found the concrete patio to be structurally defective.
