Voinovich And Tubbs-Jones Take Office Today

Tubbs-Jones Is Ohio's First Black Congresswoman

JonesWASHINGTON, Posted 4:25 p.m. January 6, 1999 -- Ohio has its first black congresswoman.

Former Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Stephanie Tubbs Jones took the oath of office today along with other members of Congress elected Nov. 3.

She replaces Louis Stokes, who retired.

Earlier today, former Ohio Governor George Voinovich took the oath of office in the Senate chamber along with 34 senators elected or re-elected in November.

Voinovich resigned as Ohio governor shortly before his term ended in order to join the Senate. He replaces John Glenn, who also retired. Following the Senate's custom, Sen. Mike DeWine escorted Voinovich to the front of the Senate and stood by as Voinovich took the oath.

Voinovich also carried his family's red Bible.

After Vice President Al Gore administered the oath, Voinovich signed the Senate roll.
