Investigators Search For Leads In Case Of Missing Girl

UPDATED: 9:24 am EDT April 6, 2004

Cleveland police and FBI scoured the neighborhood where a 14-year-old girl disappeared, searching for leads, reported NewsChannel5.

Investigators went door to door, speaking to business owners, and asking them if they have any surveillance video that could be of use to the case of Gina DeJesus, who disappeared on her way home from school Friday, near W. 110th Street and Lorain.

They have had no substantial leads as of yet. On Monday evening, concerned residents of the neighborhood held a vigil for the missing girl, and pressed council members as to why an Amber Alert was not issued.

Police have said that the disappearance does not fit the criteria for issuing an Amber Alert, which includes someone having to witness the abduction.

Fifteen FBI agents are now working with the Cleveland police on Gina's case, which they are classifying as a mysterious disappearance.

"We don't know whether she walked away, or whether it's a kidnapping, abduction," said Bob Hawk, of the Cleveland FBI.

Gina's family and friends spent the last three days posting flyers with the teen's picture all over the neighborhood on Cleveland's near west side, where there continues to be a heavy police presence.

It was in this same neighborhood that 17-year-old Amanda Berry disappeared one year ago, while walking home from work.

Berry has still not been found. Investigators have not made any connection between Berry's disappearance and Gina's.

Gina, a special education student at Wilbur Wright Middle School, is 5 feet 3 inches tall and 135 pounds. She was last seen wearing a tan shirt with a white sweater, black pants, and a light blue jacket.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Cleveland police at (216) 621-1234.
