Company Makes Snowboards Featuring Porn Stars

Parents Concerned About Teens Buying Boards

UPDATED: 8:54 am EST February 10, 2004

Snowboarding is the fastest-growing sport among teens, and every winter weekend hundreds are hitting the slopes.

But as NewsChannel5's Paul Kiska reported in this special assignment, they might be running into more than they bargained for with the latest snowboards -- that feature pictures of scantily clad women.

The women are porn stars. Steve Hirsh, the owner Vivid Videos, the world's largest adult film company, struck a deal with the snowboard company Sims to make snowboards featuring popular porn stars.

And the boards are selling fast at northeast Ohio ski shops -- and are so popular they are running out of them at the stores, reported NewsChannel5.

"You don't have to be a good snowboarder as long as you get out on the slopes and you have one of these boards -- you'll look like you know what you're doing," said Jenna Jameson, of Vivid Video.

The boards in the stores proudly show off some of Vivid's most popular porn stars, and it gets worse -- x-rated snowboards can be ordered.

But on the slopes of northeast Ohio, where teenagers pack the snow-covered hills, parents are turning a cold shoulder to this type of marketing.

"I don't think it's the right place. Snowboards are for teens and this is a bad example for the teenagers that are out there," said concerned parent Jim Ferguson.

Travis Woods, of Sims Snowboards, said the boards are marketed, designed and priced for males ages 17 to 25 years old. He also said that the boards were too big for a child to ride.

A 23-year-old daredevil NewsChannel5 spoke with had some wise advise:

"If you're gonna buy a snowboard - don't buy it just for that. Buy for quality and the manufacturer," said snowboarder Jack Wolford.

But people are continuing to buy them -- NewsChannel5 reported that now you can only find the boards on eBay for about $1,000 each.
