COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro filed a complaint Monday in the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas against Craftmatic Organization, Inc. and Craftmatic of Pittsburgh for allegedly targeting the state's vulnerable residents by using high-pressure sales tactics, illegal pricing and false advertising. The complaint classified Ohio's vulnerable population as the elderly and mentally incompetent."Preying on Ohio's vulnerable populations is unconscionable," Petro said. "We want to make sure no other Ohioan is victimized by this type of false advertising and high pressure sales tactics."Petro said consumer complaints prompted an investigation into the company's sales practices. The civil complaint alleges, in part, that Craftmatic representatives targeted consumers, including many from vulnerable populations, by utilizing lengthy, high-pressure sales presentations to induce the consumers into purchasing Craftmatic beds. The complaint also alleges that the companies made illegal price comparisons in the form of deceptive price reductions, since Craftmatic beds did not have a fixed price to begin with and that the companies made illegal price comparisons with other companies' beds, which are of either higher quality or lesser price than Craftmatic beds. The state is asking that the companies comply with Ohio law and pay consumers restitution and civil penalties.Ohio residents who believe they may have been misled when purchasing a Craftmatic bed should call the Attorney General's Office at (800) 282-0515.
