Shakira Murder Suspect Remains In Protective Custody

Attorney Says Suspect Doesn't Know Why He's Being Charged

UPDATED: 12:05 pm EST November 19, 2003

The man accused of killing 11-year-old Shakira Johnson will remain behind bars.

Hines
No bond was issued for Daniel Hines during his arraignment Wednesday, NewsChannel5 reported.

Prosecutors asked for no bond to be set since Hines will likely face capital charges in the case.

The 25-year-old was charged with aggravated murder and kidnapping.

Johnson disappeared after a block party in September. Her body was found last month in a deserted field.

Prosecutors said they have DNA evidence linking Hines to the crime. His attorneys said he denies any involvement. He is currently in protective custody, away from other prisoners.

"He's concerned, doesn't understand why he's being charged. He says he didn't do anything. He has a big weight on him. He does have high blood pressure to begin with and this certainly is not helping that situation," said Hines' attorney, Paul Mancino.

Hines' preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 4.

His trial on an unrelated child rape charge is scheduled to begin Dec. 1. His lawyers said they will likely request a continuance.
