CLEVELAND -- Daniel Hines is charged with one count of murder and one count of aggravated kidnapping in connection with the Shakira Johnson murder case, NewsChannel5 reported. He is expected to be arraigned Wednesday.Cleveland Police announced Monday that Daniel Hines was arrested in connection with the murder of Shakira Johnson, WEWS reported.
Hines, 25, fears that he could be harmed if released from jail. Hines is being held in jail on an unrelated rape charge.
Police Chief Edward Lohn said that forensic evidence gathered from several locations led to the 25-year-old's rearrest. He said that DNA evidence, including blood, was found while examining some of Hines' property.Police would not say where in Hines' house they found Shakira's blood. They said Hines could have killed the girl at his home or at the lot and brought the blood back to the house on his clothes or body.Hines' lawyer, Paul Mancino, suggested police may have botched the investigation."DNA isn't always 100 percent," Mancino said. "It depends on the different techniques used to collect it, whether it is uncontaminated. One news report had Shakira's mother saying police left her home and went to his house. Maybe they brought the evidence into the house with them. We'll have to see exactly what they have."Hines was arrested and jailed in September on an unrelated rape charge. Police rearrested him Monday afternoon. The Cleveland Police have considered Hines a suspect for several weeks in the disappearance and murder of 11-year-old Shakira. His home and vehicle were both searched for evidence in the crime.Shakira was last seen at East 106th Street and Benham in early September, an area near where Hines had been living. Her body was discovered and identified in October.Shakira's mother, Alisa Randle, reportedly spoke with Hines the night Shakira disappeared.Ralph Randle, Shakira's stepfather, said that Alisa Randle "broke down" when she heard that DNA evidence may link Hines to her daughter's murder: "She asked him, 'Did you see my baby?' and he looked her in the face and said 'no.'"
