Coroner Rules Shakira's Death Homicide

Exact Cause Still Unable To Be Determined

POSTED: 4:44 pm EDT October 21, 2003

Shakira Johnson's death was ruled a homicide and a violent death, according to the Cuyahoga County coroner's report released Tuesday.

Due to the condition of the body and damage to the soft tissue, the exact cause could not be determined. No bruises, gunshot wounds or stab wounds could be seen without the soft tissue.

Cuyahoga County coroner Elizabeth Balraj said in this case, the cause of death was "very likely" strangulation.

The rest of the tests will not be completed for weeks, or possibly even months.

Until those tests are done, Balraj cannot determine whether the body was placed at the scene or whether the killing happened there.

She said that the body was at the scene for weeks.

Balraj will not be able to tell whether there was a sexual assault until more tests are done.

She said there was no bullets brought to her from the scene.
