Canal Fulton, Ohio -- A storm of controversy continues to brew in Stark County, involving three high school students, underage drinking, and now, charges of punching a pizza deliveryman.
An 18-year-old high school football star, who may have been involved in an underage drinking incident, now faces charges of assault for allegedly punching a pizza deliveryman in the face. The controversy began last week when Cody Butzer was in a car with two cheerleaders, and they were pulled over by Canal Fulton police. The two Northwest High School cheerleaders admitted to police they drank alcohol, but Butzer denied drinking alcohol even though his breath test registered the substance.Later, police said the test might have been faulty and no charges were filed. The girls were suspended from the cheerleading squad and from the soccer team, yet Butzer was allowed to play in a football game Friday night. Many parents and students are wondering if Butzer got preferential treatment.Butzer was able to avoid suspension for the alcohol incident but must now appear in court to answer to the assault charges. His hearing is scheduled for Oct. 26.Butzer is calling the incident with the pizza deliveryman self-defense.
