A controversy over the arrests of several community activists who were searching for a missing child has made its way to the Cleveland mayor's office.

NewsChannel5 reported that Shakira Johnson, 11, disappeared Saturday night after a neighborhood block party on East 106th Street last.

Police are accusing six men of kidnapping and a seventh man, community activist Khalid Samad, of aggravated burglary in their attempts to find the girl.

Officials said when Minister Richard Muhammad and other members of the Nation of Islam went to a local home, the men forced themselves inside. They are also accused of assaulting an 18-year-old and then driving the teen's mother around, trying to get information out of her, WEWS said.

The men were reportedly searching for Shakira, who has been missing for nearly a week.

On Friday, outraged supporters took their concerns to City Hall.

"Even if they could have come up with their wildest imagination, there's no way in the world they could accuse Khalid Samad of anything as ridiculous," said Imam Frederick Qasim Khan, a Samad supporter.

Mayor Jane Campbell is vowing to get to the bottom of the situation, but she said the first priority is finding Shakira.

Shakira is 4 feet 7 inches tall, weighs about 80 pounds, has light brown eyes and has sandy brown hair, which was in a ponytail when she disappeared Saturday.

Police are also looking for a bright red four-door Ford Escort or Mercury Tracer with an older-style license plate that may be involved in the girl's disappearance.

Anyone with information is urged to call Cleveland police at (216) 621-1234.
