23-Year-Old Dies During Yearly Holmes County Ritual
POSTED: 5:02 p.m. EDT September 3, 2003
MOUNT HOPE, Ohio -- Police are looking for a driver who shot and killed a Holmes County man after tomatoes were thrown at the shooter's car.
Steven Keim, 23, died during the yearly ritual in which teens and young adults in Mount Hope throw tomatoes and corn at passing cars.
This time, one driver stopped, yelled and threatened to return with a gun. When he drove past again and was again pummeled with tomatoes, he apparently got out of his car, pulled out a gun and shot Keim.
NewsChannel5 reported that a frantic 911 call from the victim's friends was just released.
"We were throwing tomatoes and this guy stopped and pulled out a shotgun and fired a couple of shots and hit him right in the face," a caller told the 911 dispatcher.
Police have a vague description of the car the man was driving -- a light-colored Lincoln or Cadillac.
Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment of the shooter. Call (216) 252-7463 with any information that can help officials.
