CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A group lobbying for a domestic partners registry is expected to file more than 5,000 petitions for an initiative, NewsChannel5 reported.
Fran Twomey said approval of the registry would acknowledge that Cleveland Heights values diverse relationships.
If approved, the registry would allow same-sex couples to create a legal document of their relationship.
The sponsoring group called "Heights Families for Equality" said its conversations with about 7,000 voters over the
last three months indicate support for the measure.
After the names are verified, the initiative will go up for a vote in Nov. 4.
Opponents, including City Councilman Jimmie Hicks Jr., said the registry is an attempt to further what he calls the homosexual
agenda.
