Suspected Case Gunman Pleads Not Guilty

Prosecutor Will Pursue Death Penalty

POSTED: 4:36 pm EDT May 30, 2003

The suspected gunman in the Case Western Reserve deadly rampage faced numerous charges, according to NewsChannel5.

Biswanath Halder

Biswanath Halder faces 338 counts, including kidnapping, assault and murder. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The charges stem from the seven-hour standoff at the Peter B. Lewis Building in which two people were wounded and graduate student Norman Wallace was killed.

In all, 141 victims were trapped inside the building during the standoff and many officers risked their lives to try to free them.

He also faces a charge of criminal terrorist activity. Halder is the first person in Ohio to ever be charged with this.

It's a new law that was enacted after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

He is in jail. No trial date was set, but Cuyahoga County prosecutor Bill Mason said he will pursue the death penalty.
