Grand Jury Approves 338 Indictments Against Case Shooting Suspect

Terrorism Charge Used For First Time In Ohio

UPDATED: 10:08 am EDT May 30, 2003

The suspect in the Case Western Reserve University shooting and hostage situation from May 9 now faces a mountain of charges, according to Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason.

Biswanath Halder

NewsChannel5's Angie Lau reported that a grand jury handed down a record-breaking 338 indictments on suspect Biswanath Halder (pictured, left), 62.

The charges stem from the seven-hour standoff at the Peter B. Lewis Building in which two people were wounded and graduate student Norman Wallace was killed.

In all, 141 victims were trapped inside the building during the standoff and many officers risked their lives to try to free them.

Some of the charges Halder faces include kidnapping, terrorism, attempted murder and murder.

For Wallace's murder, prosecutors will be seeking the death penalty.

In addition, it's the first time that the terrorism charge that was passed last May following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will be used in Ohio.

Wallace's family was very spiritual about Thursday's announcement and hopes that justice will be served.

"My feeling is that we don't do the eye-for-an-eye thing. We're allowing the justice system to take hold here. What they see fit won't come close to what God sees fit," said Rick Watkins, Wallace's uncle.

Halder is expected to be arraigned in court at 9 a.m. Friday.
