Residents in a small northeast Ohio town are shocked after its mayor and his wife were both charged with driving under the influence.

NewsChannel5's Brad Harvey reported from Portage County Municipal Court as the wife of Garrettsville Mayor Thomas Hardesty was arraigned Wednesday morning on DUI charges.

A WEWS photographer was quite suspiciously diverted to several different places in the building during the proceedings -- he felt in a clear effort to prevent NewsChannel5 from videotaping Barbara Hardesty (pictured, below).

Barbara Hardesty pleaded not guilty to charges of DUI stemming from the Saturday night arrest.

Officials said the mayor was pulled over after allegedly plowing through someone's fence and hitting a tree.

Police said they spotted his car driving down the street with a tree limb still hanging off it.

The State Patrol said Thomas Hardesty tested at twice the legal blood-alcohol level.

When Barbara Hardesty showed up to take her husband home, police said she began arguing with them and subsequently tested over the legal limit herself.

They also said there were four empty beer bottles in the front seat of her car.

Thomas Hardesty has already been arraigned on DUI charges.

Both the mayor and his wife face fines of up to $1,000 and could spend up to 180 days in jail.

Their drivers' licenses were automatically suspended.

The town of Garrettsville has a population of 2,100 residents.
