Case Professor Hid In Closet From Gunman

Charges May Be Filed In Case Shooting

POSTED: 10:01 am EDT May 12, 2003

The Peter B. Lewis Building remained off limits to everyone but police as officials continue to build their case against a suspect, NewsChannel5 reported.

Students came to the Case Western Reserve University campus to talk with counselors, while a professor who was shot at in a gunman's rampage took her message to the streets.

Susan Helper, 46, heard the gunshots and was looking for cover when suddenly she turned and saw a man pointing a gun directly at her and firing.

"Luckily, I was able to shut the door and as he shot me (but) the bullet went through the door first and that's why I'm here today," she said.

Helper spent the next three hours hiding in the closet of her second-floor office.

Charges could be filed as soon as today in Biswanath Halder, 62, the alleged gunman who police say killed one and wounded two others in a shooting at Case Western Reserve University.

Halder was arrested after a seven-hour standoff.

Friends of the only person killed dropped off flowers in remembrance of Norman Wallace, 30.

"He was in my section this semester at school so he was a wonderful person and touched a lot of people and I felt like I wanted to come down here and pay some kind of tribute to him," said John Zbozien, a friend.

Students and professionals who are seeking counseling at the student center remain shaken.

"When cell phones ring, we jump," said Stacy Saunders, a student. "When we hear sirens we're a little jumpy as far as yeah cause we just don't know."
