1 Dead, About 60 Others Safe After CWRU Shooting

CLEVELAND -- The Case Western Reserve University shooting suspect is in police custody after a seven-hour standoff, NewsChannel5 reported.
One person is confirmed dead after a gunman opened fire at the Peter B. Lewis Building. The suspect, who suffered two gunshot wounds, surrendered.He was wearing a wig and a World War II-like helmet, Cleveland Police Chief Ed Lohn said. He added the suspect, who was older, was wearing camouflage clothing and carrying two guns, one of which was a 9 mm.It all started when shots were heard at about 4:15 p.m. The gunman reportedly broke down a door with a sledgehammer and started shooting randomly in the building.
Officials said there were two others injured. One victim was shot on the first floor and the other victim was believed to have been shot on the second floor. One person was reportedly shot in the buttocks. They were taken to Meridia Huron Hospital, and are in stable conditon. Meridia Huron is a Level-2 trauma center.A woman who is seven months pregnant also made it safely out of the building. She is in stable condition at University Hospitals.At about 8 p.m., Lohn said officers and SWAT teams were going room-by-room to rescue those who were still in the building.Earlier, Lohn made a plea for the gunman to call him. It was believed the gunman may have been watching TV reports of the shooting. It was unknown if the gunman ever made contact.The building, which has an intricate design, was locked down.WEWS was told by Case students that the non-traditionally designed building offers places for those who were inside to hide.
Sachin Goel, 26, a master's student from India, said he was walking on the first floor outside the cafeteria when the gunman shot one of his friends.He said the gunman then fired at him but he and another friend dove under a table in a hallway."He had a machine gun, book bag, camouflage shirt, military green hat, white pants and a book bag," said LeKisha Spencer, 28, who works in a first-floor cafeteria. "I didn't see his face."This is finals week at CWRU, so there weren't as many students on campus, but students who were on campus were evacuated.The $62 million Peter B. Lewis Building opened in the fall and was designed by Frank Gehry, the internationally renowned architect who also created the titanium-covered Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain.Case Western is at University Circle, a park-like setting of cultural, medical and educational institutions on the eastern edge of downtown. Man Used Sledgehammer
Witnesses said the gunman approached the door in which a key card is needed to enter and broke the door down with a sledgehammer.
