CLEVELAND -- The jury is now deliberating in the case of a former security guard accused in the beating death of an alleged shoplifter.
NewsChannel5's Brad Harvey reported that Guy Wills, 41, died after an incident that occurred last fall at the Dillard's at Randall Park Mall.
Officer Jameel Talley (pictured, left) is charged with murder, involuntary manslaughter and some lesser charges. The Maple Heights police officer, who worked part time as a security guard, pleaded not guilty.
Wills, accused of stealing a $159 leather coat, allegedly struggled with Talley. Wills sustained a fractured skull, a broken collarbone and internal injuries and died a couple of days later from his injuries.
Prosecutors claimed Talley used excessive force in the struggle with Wills, who weighed 100 pounds less than Talley. Talley's defense attorney argued that Wills started the fight with Talley and that the officer was defending himself and trying to do his job.
The trial lasted seven days, and the jury is now deliberating. A verdict is not expected Tuesday, but could be in by Wednesday.
