CLEVELAND -- A big battle is brewing over what many believe could be a big boost to northeast Ohio. There is another delay in the building of the proposed medical mart is Cleveland, and new concern over whether the facility is ever built at all.Taxpayers have put forth tens of thousands of dollars to pay for the medical mart, but one councilman is calling the proposal a bait and switch, reported NewsChannel5 investigator Ron Regan. The entire project was supposed to be built at the Public Auditorium but renovating the site is now considered too expensive and could cost another $90 million. The project is now going on the edge of the Mall, looking out over Lake Erie.At a briefing before Cleveland City Council, medical mart developers said they had no idea Public Auditorium was in such poor shape when they agreed to buy it a few months back, and they were forced to change plans.Councilman Michael Polensek is skeptical."You could look at it as a bait and switch approach. We were told one thing and they presented one thing to us, and now in the 11th hour we are going to lose our opportunity to have our historic public auditorium renovated," Polensek said. This is of great concern not only to me and my colleagues but the people of Cleveland because we had an opportunity to create a true, civic center for the first time in the history of Cleveland downtown."Now new site plans will be drawn up and more studies done. The medical mart developers will be back in Cleveland next month to show what they come up with.
