UPDATED: 4:27 pm EST November 12, 2009

Firefighters on Thursday afternoon battled a house fire in Mayfield Heights.

The fire broke out around 3 p.m. at the home on Longwood Avenue.

The blaze started in the home's attached garage. The homeowner was making plumbing repairs to the home when he left to pick up his children from school.

Apparently heat in the pipes ignited something in the crawl space between the garage and the house. The homeowner returned to find the home in flames.

The family was able to get their puppy out safely.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control.
