Major layoffs could be coming to the Summit County Sheriff's Department next month.

The Akron Beacon Journal reported that Sheriff Drew Alexander plans to cut 45 deputies by Dec. 21 because of a lack of funds.

The sheriff said layoffs can be avoided if deputies give up a 3 percent raise and other benefits next year.

The deputies' union is looking at its options.
