POSTED: 8:15 am EST November 4, 2009
UPDATED: 1:39 pm EST November 4, 2009

Ernestine Carter died in a blaze that broke out on the city's east side early Wednesday morning.

Family members and neighbors rushed to the East 176th Street home after hearing about the fire.

Some neighbors said they smelled a faint odor of something burning in the middle of the night but didn't know what it was.

Investigators said the fire started in the rear of the house in the basement but they haven't officially determined a cause.

It is not suspicious.

The fire department offers residents up to three smoke detectors and will even install them.
