A 27-year-old Canton man is dead after a one-vehicle fatal crash in Perry Township late Saturday night.

Troopers said Williams Lewis Varner III was driving a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix north on Richville Drive at about 11:55 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle while trying to navigate through a left turn.

Varner went off the right side of the roadway, got back on the street, but wasn't able to maintain control and went off the left side striking tree. The impact of the crash caused the car to catch fire.

Perry Township EMS transported Varner to Affinity Hospital in Massillon where he was later pronounced dead, officials said.

Two passengers in the vehicle were injured. Both David B. Varner Jr., 22, and Alphonso C. Reed, 18, were taken to Aultman Hospital. David Varner suffered non-life threatening injuries. Reed is listed in serious condition.

None of the vehicle's occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
