Listeners Say Local DJs Went Too Far With Racist Comments

Shock jocks have been on the radio airwaves for decades, stirring up controversy and sometimes high ratings.

Quite a few shock jocks have also faced public scrutiny, and now a local deejay is coming under fire.

"The Maxwell Show" on 100.7 WMMS is known for its shock value, and much of it might offend someone.

But one local mother said what she heard on the show last Friday is worth talking about.

"I was shocked, I was hurt, I was angry and kind of sad by the whole thing," said Chantille Allen.

Allen said she was listening to the program with her family when she says she heard a slew of racist remarks.

In a letter to NewsChannel5, she said the host said African-Americans have a "distinct musky smell," and that they are jealous of whites.

"The one host made the comment that African-Americans are jealous of the scent of white people's smell of success," said Allen.

NewsChannel5's Maurielle Lue went to the WMMS station to talk to the program manager, but no one from the show wanted to talk, and some said they shouldn't have to.

"I don't agree with censorship. If you don't like it, change the channel," said "Maxwell Show" listener Joe Wagner.

Others said it's the beauty of America, even if you don't like it.

"You need to have free speech and our choice to say, but I also think you need to look at your audience and the people that are around," said Molly Prendergast, of Avon Lake.

WMMS would not give NewsChannel5 a recording of the broadcast in question. They would only say it was a re-run clip from an earlier show.

The Allen family didn't ask for the jock to be fired, but said the station has lost them as listeners for good.
