Girl Scouts To Hold Advocacy Conference For Teen Girls

UPDATED: 2:02 pm EDT July 6, 2009

The Girl Scouts of North East Ohio will hold a three-day advocacy conference for teen girls to discuss issues with experts and learn about community leadership and advocacy.

The "Voice Lessons Advocacy Conference 2009" will be held on the campus of Hiram College from July 21 through 23.

The program is open to girls entering grades 9-12 and recently graduated high school seniors. Experts from local clubs and educational institutions will lead discussions and keynote addresses on the subjects of domestic violence, pay equity, going green, world refugees and women's health. The speakers will also talk about their experiences as leaders and the importance of giving a voice to the voiceless.

Girls will first listen to the speakers and ask questions. Next, they will each select one topic they are passionate about and group with other girls who share that passion. The groups will conduct research and expand their knowledge on their topics of interest. Finally, the teams will work directly with the expert in their field (one of six speakers) to develop a plan to advocate for positive social change.

The cost is $50 for Girl Scouts and $60 for non-Girl Scouts. The package includes two nights accommodation in the dorms at Hiram College, all meals and snacks, a scavenger hunt, a bonfire and gift bags.

Financial assistance is available and the conference is open to all teen girls. The deadline to register is July 14. For more information call 800-852-4474 or e-mail programs@gsneo.org.
