Auditor: Be Wary Of Potential Reappraisal Scam

The Medina County Auditor is warning residents to be wary of a scammer who may be posing as an employee with the auditor’s office.

Auditor Michael E. Kovack said Tuesday that a Medina County resident was called by someone claiming he was in the area doing property reappraisals and needed to view the inside of the resident’s home. The caller suggested the resident didn’t need to be home at the time of the reappraisal, and that the door could be left unlocked for the caller to check the house on his own.

The auditor’s office said in almost all instances, the reappraisal staff only views structures from the outside of the building. In any situation where the staff would enter a home, they said it is usually at the homeowner’s request and by appointment with the owner’s presence required.

Kovack said this incident happened in the Wadsworth area, but may be occurring in other parts of the county.

“I urge you to call your local police if you receive a phone call or visit from individuals purporting to be from my office and requesting access to your home,” Kovack said.

The Medina office number is 330-725-9756; the Brunswick office number is 330-225-7100, ext. 9756 and the Wadsworth office number is 330-336-6657, ext. 9756.
