A 12-year-old Geauga County boy was thrown from an all-terrain vehicle, and then hit by the ATV, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The ATV was driven by Lucas Schieman, 12, of Novelty. Police said Schieman was backing down Hidden Oak Trail northbound when he went off the side of the road and down an embankment. Schieman was thrown off the vehicle, which then rolled over onto him before rolling down the embankment.

Schieman was taken by helicopter to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland. Reports said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Chardon Post of the Highway Patrol.
