9 Indicted In Check-Cashing Scam

CLEVELAND -- Cuyahoga County prosecutors indicted nine people on charges stemming from an alleged check-cashing scam.The following people were listed in the indictment: 20-year-old Andrea Bennett, of Euclid; 23-year-old Charles Bennett, of Euclid; 21-year-old Joy Bennett, of Euclid; 25-year-old Robert Easley, of Maple Heights; 20-year-old Joy Helton, of Euclid; 19-year-old April Helton, of Euclid; 18-year-old Angel Winfield, of Cleveland; 20-year-old Caleb Kelley, of Cleveland; and 19-year-old Tatyanna Marshall, of Euclid.Investigators said the suspects targeted at least four small independent beverage stores where they cashed fake payroll checks.The checks were cashed in April and May and appeared to be authentic and the suspects provided legitimate identification. Investigators said the total value of the theft was more than $8,400.The suspects were charged with engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, forgery and theft.Arraignments are scheduled for June 30.
