CLEVELAND -- Last week, a federal indictment was handed down in connection with the ongoing Cuyahoga County corruption investigation.Four people now face charges in connection with the investigation, including former employees of the Cuyahoga County engineer's office.County Engineer Robert Klaiber said Monday that he was stunned by the alleged bribery in his office. Cuyahoga County Indictment Five years ago, an investigation by NewsChannel5's Duane Pohlman uncovered huge costs of a lavish new building for the engineer and his staff, and that move is now part of what led to the indictments. The investigation revealed the lavish furnishing and expensive space the engineer's office had recently moved into. Now, the contract, the space and former employee Kevin Payne are at the center of the indictment.Payne and Kevin Kelly, former managers in the engineer's office, face bribery charges. At the time of the NewsChannel5 investigation, Payne said he didn't believe it was too expensive, but now federal investigators say Payne and the engineer's office received a furnished condo, free of charge.Klaiber claims he knew nothing about it, but he admitted to receiving some free limo rides.Klaiber had not been named or charged in the federal investigation, and insists he didn't know and that he was duped by his own people. Those who allegedly duped him now face serious federal bribery charges, and the indictments point directly to other, more powerful elected leaders who allegedly received those bribes. Those officials have not yet been charged.
