Brother, Neighbor Save Toddler Who Fell In Family Pool

A Lake County toddler is lucky to be alive after falling into his family's pool, and he can credit his big brother and a neighbor for saving him.

The incident happened on River Road on the border of Perry and Madison townships.

The mother of 2-year-old Austin is warning parents to never turn their back when their child is near water; in the excitement of a Memorial Day cookout, it's a lesson she learned all over again, reported NewsChannel5's Maurielle Lue.

Austin was playing outside and accidentally slipped into the pool. His brother found him face down in the murky water.

"I tried to do CPR the best I could but I didn't know how to do it," said Austin's mother, Erin Caron. "I just started screaming for anyone who could hear me to come and help me," said Austin's mother, Erin Caron.

Neighbor Robert Leasure heard the screaming.

"The second scream was so blood curdling I knew something was wrong," said Leasure.

Leasure took off running toward his neighbor's house.

"I grabbed him he was so cold, gave him CPR," said Leasure. "I saw his neck twitch. I knew there was still a chance, best feeling I ever had."

Leasure learned CPR a few years ago when his job offered it for free.

Caron said she has already enrolled in a CPR class.

Caron said the boys were not supposed to play in the back yard. The deck area is being renovated and the pool was covered, but recent rain and falling debris caused an opening in the tarp.
