Man With Cerebral Palsy, Epilespy Mugged At Rapid Station

UPDATED: 11:27 am EDT April 8, 2009

Regional Transit Authority police are looking for the person who mugged a man with cerebral palsy.

The mugging took place at the West 98th Street rapid station near Detroit and West Boulevard, and the crime was caught on tape.

The victim, 51-year-old James Lamb, spoke exclusively to NewsChannel5 in a Crime Stoppers report.

Lamb has epilepsy and cerebral palsy, so for him, driving is not an option.

"I have no other choice but to ride public transportation," said Lamb.

On Sunday night, a thief stopped Lamb from boarding his train. Surveillance video then shows the crook pushing Lamb and grabbing his cell phone.

The cameras also show several close-up shots of the mugger as he bolted from the rapid station.

Lamb tried to follow but worried he would have a seizure.

"I'm not trying to lose life and I didn't want to really get hurt," said Lamb.

The robber was wearing a multi-colored Yankees jacket and a knit cap with the word "Cleveland" on it.

"I definitely want him caught," Lamb said. "I want him prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Cleveland City Councilman Jay Westbrook said he's planning to meet with RTA officials to discuss safety improvements.

"I know the victim and I'm very shocked and disappointed that this crime occurred," Westbrook said. "The public needs to feel safe wherever they are especially in public transit locations."

Lamb said, "Until I see something done, I'll be skeptical."

He wants more officers patrolling RTA stations. He also has a message for the person who mugged him.

"There's an opportunity in life and it doesn't have to be robbery," Lamb said.

RTA police said they've seen four or five similar crimes at rapid stations in the last few months.

If you recognize the person who robbed Lamb, call Crime Stoppers at 216-252-7463 or RTA police at 216-566-5163.
