UPDATED: 7:23 pm EDT April 5, 2009

One of the officers hurt in a shooting that left three Pittsburgh police officers dead grew up and worked in northeast Ohio.

Pittsburgh police said it was a domestic dispute over a dog that led to the deadly ambush Saturday.

A former police officer from Reminderville was one of the two officers wounded during the four-hour siege.

Officer Timothy McManaway was shot in the hand while trying to protect a fallen comrade during the Pittsburgh rampage.

Those who knew him are not surprised by his unselfish bravery.

He grew up in Northfield, lived in Aurora and worked for the Reminderville Police Department for five years before moving to Pittsburgh in the early 1990s.

"When I started here I watched Tim, I learned from Tim," Sgt. Mike Varga said.

Varga was a rookie when he worked with Officer McManaway. On Sunday, he wore a black band over his badge in honor of his slain Pittsburgh comrades and the man who had a huge impact on his life.

"What he gave to this community he also gave to me and that was the ambition and initiative to go out and do the job and become the best I could be," Varga said.

He learned being the best means putting your on life on the line as officer McManaway did during the ambush.

"He didn't even want to leave one of the fallen officers even though he was under fire and that's just the kind of guy Tim was. He had your back all the way through," Varga said.

Reminderville resident Judy Andrews has lived in Reminderville for 35 years.

"Everybody knew Tim out here, the residents, and they knew Officer McManaway was on duty on that midnight shift they slept well that night," Andrews said.

The three police officers were the first to die in the line of duty in the city of Pittsburgh in 18 years.

The 23-year-old gunman was arrested after the standoff.
