100 Jobs Cut At Cleveland's Alcoa Plant

POSTED: 9:14 pm EST January 6, 2009
UPDATED: 10:26 am EST January 7, 2009

Bad news for another local plant: aluminum producer Alcoa Inc. is cutting 13 percent of its global work force, or more than 13,500 jobs, because of the economic downturn.

At the Cleveland facility, 100 positions will be cut by the end of the week. Half of those affected will be hourly and half salaried. They have 1,250 workers before the layoffs.

Alcoa is also implementing a global salary and hiring freeze.

The cuts will lowe the total output by more than 18 percent annually.

Alcoa's news also added to growing concerns about the Labor Department's upcoming report Friday on the December job market.
