EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Residents of an East Cleveland high rise remain out of their homes with no word when they'll be allowed to return. An electrical fire that took place Saturday knocked out power to the 27-story building. The culprit was apparently an electrical line that went down on Superior Avenue that sent a power surge into the building.More than 500 residents had to be evacuated as a result. As clean-up crews work to repair some of the damage caused by the fire, residents of Lake Park Tower were given their first chance to briefly get back in their homes on Sunday.Officials said the fire started just after noon on the sixth floor of the Lake Park Tower on Superior Avenue.Images: Apartment Building Fire One resident said that smoke was filling the building. Residents were escorted outside and then taken to the Martin Luther King Civic Center.Fire officials said it was an electrical fire. There is currently no power in the building. The fire was contained to a small area, but smoke and water caused more damage.Management said it will take at least a few days to assess the extent of damage. In the meantime, the Red Cross has set up a nearby shelter. One of those displaced by the fire is East Cleveland Mayor Eric Brewer, who assured residents the building is secure."It is under 24-hour security on site at every entrance and security officers walking the floors of the building on a consistent basis," he said.Because the building's backup generator was broken, there were no lights in the stairwell when it was evacuated.Brewer promises that and any other violations will be addressed."The owner of the building is working with us to make sure that the building is brought back on line and that there is a power supply and that all the electrical issues that need to be resolved are resolved," he said.
