Man, Teen Accused Of Posing As Officers Try To Stop Car

POSTED: 3:34 pm EDT September 24, 2008
UPDATED: 5:46 am EDT September 25, 2008

Amherst police said a man and a teen posed as officers in a fake squad car and tried to make traffic stops.

Police charged Joseph Gargasz with impersonating an officer, obstruction official business, possessing criminal tools and disorderly conduct.

They also cited a 16-year-old for the same offenses, along with curfew violation.

Police said the suspects were in the area of state Route 58 early Sunday morning in an older model white Ford Crown Victoria with police-style air horn and red and blue strobe lights.

Police said the two tried to pull over a motorist while using the lights and horn, then drove past the motorist and gave him the middle figure. After police began to investigate the complaint made by the motorist, the suspects were located.

Police also cited the teen suspect's father for parental responsibility.

Police also required that the Crown Victoria, owned by the teen's parents, be stripped of police-related equipment before being returned to the owners.
