Clevelander Makes Documentary On Spirituality In Work Place

Lisa Elliott is an enterprising Cleveland woman who works at Lorain County Community College.

One day she woke up wondering about the idea of spirituality in the work place, so she set out to make a documentary on the subject, reported NewsChannel5's Ted Henry.

Elliott created a 40-minute video called Spirit-Works in which 13 Clevelanders relate their views on sharing their spirituality in the workplace.

In producing the video, Elliott wanted to learn if today's workplace is even open to spirituality.

Elliott said she's always been a students of other people's believes, starting with her family's. making her video of spirituality was easy for her, she said, except for the editing.

"Editing is a tough process because you leave a lot of meat on the floor," she said.

When Henry asked Elliott where the idea came from, she said, "I was just was very curious about how do people go to church, or mosque or temple, and then go to work a different way."

Meaning, how do people go from feeling God and love on Sunday to feeling stress and work pressure on Monday.

"They call it the Monday morning gap. There's this bridge that happens between attending service, whatever that service may be, going to sleep that night, waking up is Monday," Elliott said.

From her own research, Elliott concluded that we're really two different people on Sunday and on Monday.

"Because the work environment is so complicated, so messy, so scary sometimes, that we leave that part of us in the car at home or even back at the church or synagogue or mosque," she said.

Elliott said she is finding more exceptions to the rule, people who are bridging that gap and who are taking that spiritual-centeredness they have on Sunday into their offices on Monday.
