Dimora Shows For County Commissioners Meeting

POSTED: 9:38 am EDT July 31, 2008
UPDATED: 5:29 pm EDT July 31, 2008

County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora asks Cuyahoga County citizens not to rush to judgment about his guilt before the regularly scheduled meeting started Thursday morning.

Many wondered whether Dimora would show up at the meeting after a massive raid by the IRS and FBI.

Dimora said that he has not done anything that warranted this type of investigation.

"This has been one of the most difficult and stressful times in my life for me personally and for my family," Dimora said.

He said he was "shocked and stunned" after FBI and IRS agents raided his home and office.

"I would never do anything to hurt our great county and the great people who live in Cuyahoga County," he said.

During his three-minute speech, Dimora also said he will keep working as commissioner.

Dimora said his name will be cleared but didn't answer any further questions.

"The inquiry is in the hands of the federal government and I cannot, under the advice of counsel, comment of answer any questions," he said.

On Monday, several businesses and county officials' homes were raided.

Many people questioned whether Commissioner Dimora would face the cameras and finally speak out.

So far, he has kept a very low profile.

He did not show up for work Tuesday at the County Offices, but when Commissioner Peter Lawson Jones was asked about Dimora's responsibilities he said he expected him to attend the meeting as usual.

Although Dimora has not been charged, he is one of the main targets of a federal investigation.

His Independence home was searched and so was his county office. Items such as construction project documents, employment applications and a list of Dimora's contacts were all seized as possible evidence.

Cuyahoga County Auditor Frank Russo returned to the administration building Wednesday. He said he has not done anything wrong and plans to stay in office.

Russo said it is business as usual in the Auditors Office.
