Homes To Be Demolished Along Local River

City Given $1M To Demolish, Elevate Homes

U.S. Sen. George Voinovich announced Tuesday that Valley View will be given more than $1 million from Federal Emergency Management Agency for a project that includes elevating and demolishing homes in that city.

Voinovich, who represents Ohio, is a member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

The proposed project includes the elevation of up to 21 residential structures and the acquisition and demolition of two in Valley View, Voinovich said.

The properties that will be acquired have suffered repetitive flooding primarily due to the Cuyahoga River. The land will be returned to open space, allowing flooding to occur without damage to property.

The elevation will be completed so that the first-floor elevation of the home is 2 feet above the base flood elevation, Voinovich said.

Officials believe the project will reduce future insurance claims.
