Possible Human Remains Found Near Ashtabula Co. Pond

Two Brothers Charged With Beating, Kidnapping Man

A farmer near an Ashtabula County pond found partial human remains which appear to be those of missing Cleveland man John E. Maruschak, according to family attorney Ian N. Friedman.

The remains have been taken to the Cuyahoga County coroner, where a positive identification is being determined through DNA, Friedman said.

The sheriff's office said investigators found bone fragments and pieces of clothing. Friedman said the farmer, who assisted in the search, first found the remains Wednesday night.

Police have charged brothers Aaron and Alex Wulff in connection with Maruschak's disappearance.

In an affidavit, police said Alex Wulff told them he killed Maruschak after he attempted to break into his house.

Wulff told detectives he beat Maruschak with a baseball bat and dumped him in a Cleveland park.

He said he returned to find Maruschak dead and then took the body to his father's Ashtabula County property, burned it for six hours and scattered the ashes.

Both brothers are charged with kidnapping and felonious assault. More charges could be filed.

Friedman said the family has given DNA samples to the coroner, but that they believe the remains belong to Maruschak.
