A woman was in court Monday in connection with the death of her 6-year-old niece.

Police said Lynda Sykes, 45, took her her neice Deshaunsay Sykes Crowder to the emergency room last week, saying the girl drowned at Edgewater Park.

Sykes has been charged in connection with the child's death and Judge Michael Ryan set bond at $3 million.

The child's mother is in prison, so her aunt had custody.

During the court hearing, Sykes was called a flight risk and asked for a high bond.

Officials said Sykes has multiple state ideas and aliases. She also has a criminal history that involves violence and deception.

Although Sykes said her niece drowned, officials said she was severely beaten and suffocated.
