Woman Shot To Death Days After Losing Mother To Cancer

A woman was shot and killed while playing cards on her front porch late Tuesday night.

Cleveland police said Ebony Jefferson, 31, was shot at about 11:20 p.m. on East 146th Street.

They said Jefferson was on the porch with three or four other people when a man, 25 to 30 years old, tried to rob them.

Officers said that for some reason, the man began firing off several rounds. One struck Jefferson in the right side.

She was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, where she died in surgery.

Jefferson, a mother of two, lost her mother two days ago to breast cancer. Her mother was supposed to be buried on Thursday, and the family had come together to mourn her when the shooting happened.

Police said they have no suspects and have made no arrests.

Witnesses believe the shooter was one of a group of people hanging out across the street from a nearby school.

Jefferson worked as a nursing assistant for Cuyahoga County, and her friend Duana Rhinehart said she went into jails.

"She gave medication if they needed it. Ironically, the same people who took her out are the same people she tried to help," Rhinehart said.

There is a camera on the school and others in the neighborhood, so police are hoping video footage can help solve the crime.

A memorial fund for Jefferson's family has been set up and donations can be made at any First Merit Bank branch.
