PERRY, Ohio -- The Plain Dealer reports that the Perry nuclear
power plant has been shut down since Sunday.
It's the second unscheduled shutdown in three months at the plant located 35 miles northeast of Cleveland.
FirstEnergy Corp. spokesman Todd Schneider said there was a false alarm of damage in the turbine.
The false signal occurred during a weekly test. Schneider said public health and the environment were not at risk.
The faulty equipment will take a week to repair.
FirstEnergy is also repairing the disabled Davis-Besse nuclear
power plant near Toledo where boric acid nearly ate through a steel
cap on the reactor vessel.
Schneider said to make up the lost nuclear power FirstEnergy
will rely on power from its coal plants and purchase electricity
from other companies.
