A search for a missing swimmer in the Tuscarawas River has been suspended for the day because of weather conditions.

Brian Byington, 32, went missing near Mill and South Broadway on Wednesday afternoon.

Crews searched the water for about an hour Tuesday morning before the mission was called a recovery.

Divers were using Sonar and three cadaver dogs to find Byington.

Byington's wife, Elizabeth, said that he wanted to swim across the river but yelled for help when he was about halfway across.

"He was swimming across and then all of a sudden he yelled help three times," she said. "The first time, he yelled 'help' three times, two more times and that was the last of him. I heard him yell."

Captain Wes Tucke of the New Philadelphia Fire Department said a lot of people underestimate the undercurrents of the water.

"Well, the Tuscarawas River along with other rivers people don't understand," Tucke said. "They may look calm but there's undercurrents in rivers and especially in this area. There's a utility crossing here ... it's pretty strong rapids."
