Cuyahoga County Warns About West Nile Virus

UPDATED: 6:21 am EDT July 7, 2008

Along with the great weather of summer months in northeast Ohio come the mosquitoes. Our warm temps and rainfall have created perfect conditions for more of them this year. But understanding a few extra facts about those skeeters can get them to buzz off.

At the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, Joe Lynch researches better ways to eradicate mosquitoes from catch basins. Mosquitoes are the most deadly creatures on the planet, because of their ability to carry and spread disease.

In northeast Ohio, some mosquitoes can carry West Nile virus. Already, some mosquitoes have tested positive for the disease this summer in Cuyahoga County.

But you can do a lot to reduce your risk of contracting the potentially fatal disease. According to Lynch, prevention starts with cleaning up the yard.

"We need help from the general public getting rid of standing water around their homes. Getting rid of tires behind garages, 5 gallon buckets, make sure lids are on garbage cans -- even cleaning out the gutter helps everybody," said Lynch.

Also, be careful what you wear when you’re out and about. Mosquitoes love the way we smell.

"Perfume, colognes, soaps, anything giving off odor will attract mosquitoes," said Lynch.

Insect repellants containing 5 to 10 percent of the chemical DEET are most effective. Use them sparingly on young children, and never on babies.

Mosquitoes prefer children, so keep them protected. Wearing light-colored clothing and, if possible, long sleeves and pants will give you added protection.
