Cleveland Announces Plan To Keep Streets Safe This Summer

UPDATED: 5:34 pm EDT July 2, 2008

Police on Wednesday announced a new plan to keep the streets of Cleveland safe this summer, and the new plan follows two fatal shootings that sent shockwaves through city neighborhoods.

The city's latest crackdown on crime is called Operation Focus and police said it will be similar to a joint effort with the Ohio State Highway Patrol to keep Cleveland neighborhoods safe.

From now until the start of the school year, police from across the division are being redeployed to areas known for violent crime.

Those neighborhoods will be subject to more aggressive policing.

The crackdown comes amid rising concerns that the city is on the verge of another deadly summer.

Public Safety Chairman Kevin Conwell, a past critic of aggressive policing, says something needs to be done to stop the violence.

However, he fears the ramifications it could have on black neighborhoods.

Several community groups stood with Mayor Frank Jackson in support of Operation Focus, including Regina Marshall Sheppherd, whose 16-year-old son was shot and killed in a random attack last year as he stepped off a bus.

She said it is time for the police and the community to work together to end violence.

Police said they would not identify the neighborhoods being targeted by Operation Focus, saying they wanted to make sure the officers were safe.
